How Do You Make Stress Balls?

Stress Balls are simple, affordable and fun stress relievers.  And whilst the best stress balls are durable and long lasting, it is perfectly possible for you to make your own stress balls at home.  However, this should only be used as a temporary measure because home made stress balls have a tendency to burst!  And that can be very messy!

That said, making your own stress balls can be great fun and is definitely something you can do with the kids – although be warned that this can get very messy!

So how do you make stress balls at home?

Firstly, cover a suitably large area with a dust cover.  It can be very messy to make stress balls at home!

Then get a strong balloon.  The type of balloon you choose is crucial.  Do not choose a modelling balloon as they tend to burst very easily.  Your balloon should be a thick rubber one, and any shape will do although round is probably easiest.

Next, half inflate the balloon with air.  Pinch and hold it closed at the neck with your fingers.  Then insert a small filling funnel into the neck.  Partly fill it with flour, corn flour, gravy granules, gel beads or similar.  Finally, gently release the neck allowing some air to escape gently up the outside of the funnel.  As it does so, your chosen stress ball filling will drop down into the balloon.  Be patient!  This step takes some practise and can get quite messy!

Gently re-inflate the partly filled balloon and repeat until the balloon is filled to the required extent with the filling.

Pinch off the balloon and tie at the neck to create your very own stress ball.  If you wish, you can decorate the stress ball that you have made.

What Are Stress Balls?

Stress balls are squishy balls, which can be used to relieve stress and pent up tension. They are also known as stress relievers, stress toys or stress relief balls.

Originally stress balls were made from a robust polyurethane foam rubber, where the bubbles created during the production of the foam itself produced the necessary “squidgy” feel. However there are increasingly different versions around these days. Some of the newer types of stress balls are made from gel, or even a flour-like creation contained within a cloth, rubber or balloon-like skin.

The texture and robustness of the stress ball is essential to its proper use. And whilst the most common shape for a stress ball is, well, ball shaped, they can come in virtually any shape, sizes and color. And because there are wide variations between different types of stress ball, it is important to choose one that suits your needs.

For example, a well muscled man sitting in a driving cab for long periods of the day may benefit from having a firmer, more elongated stress ball in the small of his back. In contrast, a senior citizen with arthritis in their hands should choose a softer ball with reflex nodules to massage the reflex points of the hands as it is used.

Stress balls are not toys and are not recommended for children.

Stress balls are affordable and come in lots of cheery bright colours. Some come with integral sparkle glitter and some even vibrate. And they are even soft enough not to cause any damage to fixtures, fittings OR your wallet even when thrown at the wall!

However stress balls can only be used as effective stress relievers as part of an active stress management program. Click on the link for stress relief tips ecourse and to download your free stress relief ebook.
